The Market Theatre and Windybrow Theatre present the Magnet Theatre production of I Turned Away and She Was Gone.
South African theatre legend Jennie Reznek returns to the stage by popular demand in I Turned Away and She Was Gone. Her acclaimed one-woman show produced by the Magnet Theatre has been nominated for four prestigious Fleur du Cap Awards: Best Actress, Best Solo performance, Best New South African Script, and Best original sound score.
The show poetically explores the passage and life cycles of three generations of women – mother, daughter, grandmother – and the relationship we all have with our past, present and future selves. In this captivating reworking of the Demeter-Persephone story, Reznek takes the audience on a journey of discovery of the bonds that connect mothers and children; the cycle of daughters transforming into mothers and then ageing parents and the inevitable loss of life.
Written and performed by Reznek, the production excitingly reunites the stellar creative Magnet Theatre team of director Professor Mark Fleishman; designer Craig Leo (Tall Horse, Or You Could Kiss Me, London Road, War Horse); choreographer Ina Wichterich (Every Year, Every Day, I am Walking, Cargo, Rain in a Dead Man’s Footprint, Biko’s Quest) with original music by Neo Muyanga (BLK Sonshine, The Flower of Shembe, Memory of How It Feels). Videography is by Sanjin Muftić.
The play will be performed at the Market Theatre from Tuesdays to Sundays from 15 September until 02 October 2016 at 20h15.
