Mr. Spike Lee makes a cinematic come back with the satirical musical drama Chi-Raq. The film is set in the south of Chicago. From its inception the title of the film, Chi-Raq, a conflation of Iraq and Chicago, caused a considerable stir. The term Chi-Raq is commonly used by South Side residents to liken the area to a war zone due to its extremely high crime rate. Many believed that the title could easily be seen to be a glorification of gang violence or even make light of a literally, deadly situation.
In the midst of the uproar, Mr. Lee proceeded to shoot in May 2015 in Englewood, Chicago, and wrapped up in July 2015. The film has an all-star cast that includes Mr. Nick Cannon, Mr. Wesley Snipes, Ms. Jennifer Hudson, Ms. Angela Bassett, Mr. John Cusack, Mr. Samuel L. Jackson with Teyona Parris acting as the leading lady. This film marks Mr. Lee reuniting with Ms. Bassett, Mr. Jackson, and Mr. Snipes. He worked with all three of them before on films such as Mo Better Blues, Jungle Fever and Malcom X.
Chi-Raq is based on Aristophanes Lysistrata a mythical classic Greek comedy play, where women withhold sex from their husbands as punishment for fighting in war. The women of Chicago embark on the same mission by withholding sex from their partners involved in or perpetuating gang violence.
